In the beginning...

Well, one has to start somewhere, so here goes.

An idea has begun to grow in me that we need to think very seriously about what is going on in the world and how we are spending our money, our creative energies and our applications of technology. "Big deal", I hear you yawn. "So what's new," and you are forgiven for switching off. But bear with me for a minute longer. First,  there are thousands of commentators writing about precisely the same issue, which attests to its importance. Right? Second, you cannot begrudge just one more commentator contributing to the debate if the tidal swell of concern and thought begins to bring about change and thinking for the better. Yes? The point is, or one of the points is: we are rejoicing in the Higgs Boson and Curiosity advances of our age in recent weeks and months, yet we cannot mobilise our wills and technologies to share food more equitably on planet Earth. Why is this? That is the point of starting this blog and inviting others to consider the same question(s). Or one of the points.

Don't get me wrong. As an educator and one in awe at the advances in science and technology, and a reveller in the beauty and majesty of our universe and this particular corner of it, I am not dismissing the pursuit of pure science or the triggers and paths that lead to new inventions. What bugs me is how we truly justify this pursuit in the face of so many other pressing human problems; why can't Science and Technology focus on these.
